Kick it off Wichita. The 2008 CMA Awards show has started and it's started with a bang.  Two of the best guitar players in all of country music are burnin' it up on stage.  Brad Paisley and Keith Urban.  Brad Paisley and Keith Urban are smokin'!

This show open reminds me of the opening of Happy Days. I expect to see Fonzie give the thumbs up any second.

Here are your hosts... Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood. Even though he's a master guitar player... he hasn't mastered the art of the quick change yet.  He was still tucking in his shirt on the way out.  Fortunately for him I think everyone was looking at Carrie.

There's the King George Strait.  Does this guy ever age?  I actually think he's getting younger.

Pretty good opening exchange by Brad and Carrie.  Oh look it's Old Lady Urban and Wolverine. If you are wondering what these two are doing on the show... I guarantee it has nothing to do with the fact that they have a new movie coming out.  That's Australia coming to a theater near you November 26.

Here we go with Single of the Year!  And the winner is George Strait!  Still a classic.  He's walking up with producer, Tony Brown, a classic in his own right.

While we are taking a break, let me give you a little advice if you are visiting Nashville... the food at Paradise Park is worth the trip by itself. They just told me the kitchen stays open till 4 and they may have to throw me out.  I am now officially addicted to their sweet potato fries.  Thems good eats.

Kellie Pickler evidently raided Madonna closet for her clothes tonight.  She must have left the whip backstage.  But trust me, I ain't complaining.

My man Alan Jackson has evidently started a riot in the arena.  Wait!  They are all doing the same dance.  Is this some kind of mass hysteria? No, they're just having a good time!  Get it?

Billy Ray and Miley are about to introduce the winner of Song of the Year.  Wait for it...

I thought it would come down to the battle between Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles and Alan Jackson.  Easy for me to say of course after the fact.

Sorry -- we had a little technical burp.  But now we're back. Miranda's performance of "More Like Her" was great and now Lady A is tearing it up.  Show's going great so far.  For 12 years Vince Gill set the gold standards for CMA hosts.  But Brad and Carrie have done a great job so far and are making their mark as well.

Another break... and another chance to hear from another one of our favorite country artists...  Big Kenny.

(Either JavaScript is not active or you are using an old version of Adobe Flash Player. Please install the newest Flash Player.)

Some of you have asked if you can watch the awards online since you may be at work... you can see the show replayed in it's entirety on CMT Nov.29th.  See CMT.com for more details.  How bout them apples!

Martina's bringing out the leather just like Kellie Pickler.  Madonna's looking on and smiling.  Martina is always belting it. I've always wondered how that big big voice comes out of the little bitty body.

Okay guys I'm soliciting your opinion... who do you think is going to be entertainer of the year?  Sound off!

Black on black seems to be the fashion statement this evening.  Of course he's sticking with the brown cap.  He's a man of conviction.

Heidi Newfield and John Rich are about to present the award for Vocal Group of the Year. We actually just saw John walking down the street on his way to the arena.  Cuttin' it a little close aren't ya John?  And the winner is... The Little Rascals... Rascal Flatts. Congratulations boys.

Hey to Goober!

So far on the fan voting for Entertainer of the Year... we have 1 vote for Kenny Chesney, 1 for Keith Urban, 2 for Brad Paisley.  Here's another question while we're at it... Best dressed?  Worst dressed?  Let her rip friends!

Taylor Swift is Rapunzel in the tower... let down your hair! I feel like I'm on a ride at Disney Land... it's a small world after all.  Oh -- her fairy God mother aka her stylist, pulled the old switcheroo... I wonder what his name is.

Kid Rocks playing to the hometown crowd with that Titan's jersey. He's playing to me with this tune... I'm a Skynyrd fan from way back.  Turn it up!

I want to thank all our readers for saying what we can't say.  Very funny, very true.  'Nuff said.

Okay kids... I asked you earlier... best dressed?  Worst Dressed?  So far... no ones chimed in.  Do your worst... lets go!

The King is doing his impression of Jimmy Buffett... or is it Kenny Chesney?  I can't tell anymore. Of course George could sing the alphabet and it would sound good. Is Tommy Chong one of his backup singers?  If so, where's Cheech?

Remember kids... The song Jason Aldean is performing tonight will be on CMT.com tomorrow for a listening party! Now that's a country boy right there.  No leather.  No whips and chains.  Just all-American cotton and denim... I'll lay ya 5 to 1 that t-shirt came from Walmart and he's proud of it. Glad to see he ain't got above his raisin'... Thank you.

Taylor Swift is back in black to present the Best New Artist Award.  Hooray for Lady A. Congratulations kiddos!

We've just had a request for the list of the winners so far... so here ya go!

As you just saw, New Artist of the Year -- Lady Antebellum, Vocal Group of the Year -- Rascal Flatts, Song of the Year, "Stay," Jennifer Nettles,  and Single of the Year, "I Saw God Today," George Strait.  There ya go, glad to be of service.

We've gotten a lot of great comments on best dressed and worst dressed.  Way to go kids!  Keep 'em comin'.

Looks like Brad's about to do a tribute to one of the greats we lost this past year... Jerry Reed.  Give it up for the Snowman.

I think this is Carrie's fifth or sixth outfit so far tonight... I've lost count.  If she keeps this pace up she'll be in her pajamas before the shows over... or maybe naked.  I can dream can't I...

Continuing the trend for wearing black this evening... here's Reba and B&D.  Maybe they should call themselves "S&M."

A trio of newbies presents the award for Vocal Duo of the Year.  And the winner is... Sugarland!  They must have known they were going to win... they went and changed into all black!

Congratulations to musician of the year Mac McAnally.  This guy's not only a great musician but he's been writing some of the best songs EVER since I first saw him open for Joe Cocker at the University of North Alabama in 1978.  One of the best.

We apologize for the oversight in reporting the awards at this point.  The award for Music Video of the Year was presented before the show and the winner was Brad Paisley, "Waitin' on a Woman" and directed by Jim Shea.  Sorry for the oversight. For the official list of the awards go to CMT.com... they know everything!

Darius Rucker doing a fine  job of crossing over from pop to country... lets hope he sticks around a while.

The trend continues... Brad Paisley wearing all black except for the hat.  I think the show could only afford one stylist this year or this could just be an unspoken tribute to Johnny Cash. This song won Video of the Year earlier this evening. It's a video that featured Andy Griffith... nice job Ange.  I'll see ya at the diner.

This is Jen.... Thanks Shane! : )

Josh Turner and Lee Ann Womack on hand to present Album of the Year... I guess they didn't get the memo to wear all black.  A refreshing touch of color may I say.  And the winner is... "Troubadour."  The King still reigns.

Another big thanks to all of the readers of this blog for coming up with some great comments.  I think we're having more fun reading yours, than you are mine.  On a personal note to some of those Sylvan Brothers fans... thanks for remembering and God bless ya Ralph. To MR who asked about the power outage we experienced in downtown Nashville today... it's still out in some sections  but CMT is back up and running and the Sommet Center bounced back quickly.  We think it was all the hair dyers running at the same time back stage.

Alright ladies... brace yourselves.  Here's Keith Urban.  Gee... what a suprise... he's wearing black too!  You can listen to this song again at CMT.com! Head over to hear his single "Sweet Thing" on The Leak.

Here's another one we missed!  Musical Event of the Year was awarded pre-show to Robert Plant and Alison Krauss for "Gone, Gone, Gone."  Congratulations y'all.  The statues in the mail.

This tribute is what country music is all about... no further comment necessary.  Lets just listen.

Here comes my pal Vince Gill.  The nicest guy in the biz.  He's wearing black, but at least he's got a green shirt on.  He's running down the new Hall of Fame members.. Emmylou, Tom T., The Statlers and Pop Stoneman. Welcome.

Here we go with Female Vocalist of the Year... who will it be? Carrie Underwood gets the trifecta!  Congratulations Carrie... well done! Let me just say if this award were given for pure vocal talent... Alison Krauss would be given this award for life.  Because a voice like that comes along only once in a lifetime.   However, from year to year it's what you do with that voice and this year they decided Carrie did the most.  Congratulations to not only Carrie, but to Alison, Miranda, Martina and Taylor.  Thanks for a great year... looking forward to many more.

Here's Sugarland... I think Jennifer borrowed her outfit from the road show version of the Lion King!  It's the "circle of life." Kristian on the other hand is going with the requisite all black uniform. The scarf's a nice touch though...

I've just been told that this is James Otto's very first performance ever on the CMA Awards. And like any first timer he followed the rules... he wore all black.

One more shout out to all of you who are posting comments. You guys are the best group yet... keep 'em comin'!

Kenny we see you doing yet another Jimmy Buffett impression... Oops sorry... he's morphed into Bob Marley.  Right on, Mon.

That was one of the members of Bob Marley's band.. The Wailers.  Now I get it... forgive my ignorance.  I'm just a country boy.

Trace Adkins has taken the stage... how much more black can his outfit be?  The answer... none more!  But he sounds good and that's what counts by God. Thank you.

Here's our little Reesey... our hometown girl and faux June Carter Cash.  About to present Male Vocalist of the Year. wait for it... Brad Paisley! Are my eyes deceiving me or did he make a not so subtle birth announcement?

Hey it's the Eagles... they sound just like themselves.

Okay the shows at commerical. When we come back we're going to find out who guessed correctly for Entertainer of the Year.  And we'll find out who this special guest presenter is. I'm not going to say who it is but her name rhymes with Bania Gwain.

Fans... go on to CMT.com now for fan voting for the red carpet fashion poll. http://www.cmt.com/cma-awards/voting.jhtml

Great hoogly moogly!  Divorce does a body good.. I don't think Shania's ever looked this good.  And here's the Entertainer of the Year... Wow!  Kenny Chesney!  Who'd a thunk it! Suprise, suprise, suprise!  Brian Bayley just told me Kenny wore the same outfit last year when he won EOTY... something tells me we'll be seeing this outfit again!

Congratulations Kenny!  Job well done.  Well that's it, shows over and they made it right on time.  Thanks for all your comments and hanging with us from the start all the way to the very damn end of this ride!  Until next time, remember in the words of the great Robert Earl Keen, "the road goes on forever and the party never ends!" See ya on down the highway... adios!

I am not watching the awards due to Toby Keith was not even nominated for anything…what a bunch of junk when on of the top sellers, top song writers, top concert draws does not even get a nod. Somethings rotten in the CMA’s and it isn’t the fans!

  • BRADdock says:

    Posted: November 12th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Answer to Entertainer of the Year question:

    Hope Brad Paisley wins!
    Or Sugarland.

Love the King…but not this year.
Keith Urban … Okay…but not this year.

BUT FOR WHATEVER REASON…NO kc! Tired of him. He’s stuck on himself. He releases a song every other week in the hopes that one of em will chart.

Notice that the other four - non-KC nominees - are actually really good musicians. KC is just a poser…sort of perform, and stand around looking good…ala BRCyrus in the 90’s.

    Ughh…will the insanity end???!!

  • MR says:

    Posted: November 12th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Nothing against Kenny; but aside from numbers he doesn’t have much to back him up. Brad and Keith are all around better musicians/artists. Even if KC wins this year, it will be his last. If you look exclusively at live show presentation, Keith over Brad.

I have never heard such rotten music in my life what ever happened to good country music. 99% of these singers, if thats what you call them, can’t even carry a tune. If I were in the business I would be so embarrassed to even call this country music. Very upset

PLEASE KEEP THE COMMENTS COMING! AND BE DESCRIPTIVE IN YOUR COMMENTS! I’m , unfortunately, still at work. Obviously, not too focused if I’m reading this blog; however, I must say…interpreting the live show through this live blog is hilarious. By the way, I agree…perhaps KC does have something on his mind…but likewise…he’s a businessman…surely he should know that he’s on TV and conveying a sourpuss image (at least that’s what I’m getting from y’all). Hmmm…maybe somebody stole his lunch money backstage and he’s pouting!

It seems like the sound for the CMA’s is terrible every year! You’d think someone would find out how to fix it by now! The instrumental sound is louder than the vocal sound! SO ANNOYING!!

The Sommet has terrible sound. No matter how much I love the acts that come there, I will not go. Everyone I have seen there has sounded awful. Nashville needs a good place for awards and music in general.

  • BRADdock says:

Can’t see on the best/worst dressed obviously. But here’s my guesses. Carrie - probably over the top! Taylor - dressing older than her young years. Brad - White hat, T-Shirt, and Dog-Tag. Nicole - Keith’s shirt (hehe) Sugarland: KBush - That hat; Jennifer-A Stunnah!
The Montgomery Brothers - Long Coats.
    - How’s that? Was I accurate?

WHY is Rascal Flats not nominated for entertainer of the year??? Why have they not won it??? They had THE most incredible shows this year and !>@ million in ticket sales-that’s what it’s supposed to be based on. I won’t be watching if they are not even performing– Who wants to see KID Rock . for God’s sake? This show is becoming irrevalent to what the fans want.

Trace always sounds bad singing live. I think his deep voice have a problem with sound system. martina and Sugarland on the otherhand, never a problem.

  • idolbeat says:

BRAD, almost. Billy Ray had the long coat, scarf and hat - he was decked out. Miley was in a dress much older for her but suprisingly it worked. Elegant actually.

Between Carrie and Taylor, they are in the running for tying the RNC’s $150,000. Want to guess how many outfits they will have worn tonight?

  • ms says:

    Posted: November 12th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

the gay comments about kenny are not necessary! It’s based on entertaining and a million people must enjoy him considering he’s sold over a million tix each year for the past 10 years. entertainer should go to kenny, brad, or sugarland.

As far as sound goes, I think all of them have sounded fine except for a certain disney princess…some have sounded like their mikes aren’t all the way turned on but at least they still carry a tune.

Best dressed goes to either Kellie’s red carpet dress, or carrie’s dress during the show.
Worst dress…taylor swift announcing best new artist

I can’t wait for the Eagles and Rucker!

In regards to some of the previous posts….
We should take it easy on these performers. They work hard and keep us entertained. They also have a shelf life, so let them live in the momment.

I used to work in Branson and I’ve seen these country stars when they are ready to retire and have been in films and have gold records and are driving old Buicks with bald tires.

It kind of put all of this glamour and costume changing in perspective.

Oh, by the way, were did all of those dancers come from during Alan Jackson’s song? Are there that many bar dancers in Nashville or did they have to bus them in?

I am disgusted with country music for their lack of decision making awarding this carry “LOSER” Underwood anything . How just how ignorant is the voting public . you people just flat out suck !.

I know where she came from , I’m from the same city , I know how she got where she’s at and it wasn’t from talent . She road daddy’s wallet all the way . Taylor worked her tale off , she’s been doing awesome she paid her dues worked her way up from the bottom , carry has never paid a due she got a free ride and a free handout , she doesn’t deserve any awards until she has earned them .

I too have seen Chesney and Urban several times, including many others. Keith’s draw is his music, his talent. Kenny’s is the party…his stage presence is nothing short of a guy in a hat leading the masses in a series of sing-a-long songs. I love those songs but there is nothing entertaining about that. Keith is amazing…each show is different and you can’t take your eyes off of him…he is amazing!

FG you crack me up…this topic has been discussed over and over about Carrie earning her dues.. how bout 8 straight number ones…it’s the artist and everyone in the country music genre that votes for the awards…

Also, Taylor had a little help getting into the business called Myspace! it’s just as popular with the tweenies as american idol.

By the way Carrie’s family wasn’t rich so she didn’t ride daddies wallet…

Maybe if Taylor learns to actually sing as good as she writes songs then maybe just maybe she will win fv…but until then Carrie, Martina, Miranda, Alison are in a league of their own!

  • as says:

    Posted: November 12th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

ummm fg you need to do a little more reading and alot less talking because taylor swift was born in pa she rode her parents wallet to nashville, and then her first song was about tim mcgraw, you put his name on shit and it will sell, thenn she walked into the label and yelled im taylor swift give me a deal, they let her walk out and she kept comming back in with her mommy and daddy yes she got a record deal but she didnt do it by hard work, she did it by using peoples names and money and going from there. no one is saying she is or isnt a free loader but she needs to do a lot of growing up, did you happen to catch her on ellen on tuesday? on deman it and replay it and then see what we are talking about.. they are talking about the power outage on tv it was on broadway tonight so for of those who dont know nashville that could be a reason for the sound.

  • I know says:

    Posted: November 12th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Shame on y’all for talking about Kenny that way. Do any of you really really know him? To be calling him such names and stuff shows how immature and how ignorant most of you are. Plus Ryan is only one on here that comes even close to knowing Kenny because he certainly knows why Kenny not himself tonight. And it is goes way beyond anyone even knows. I guess no one on here is on his private myspace and haven’t read about his ‘lady love’. I feel bad for him trying to be so nice to everyone and then get knocked down by people who have nothing better to do then be cruel and don’t even know him.

I am shocked at the less than generious reception of such a great new talent, Darius Rucker, to country music. The king himself, George Strait, who I used to describe as a class act barely clapped. Highly disappointing!!!!

I’ve lived the fishbowl, on a lesser scale. I know how hard it is with my years in modeling. You try not to show the world, but you can’t.
Give these guys a break.. it’s not easy, despite how it looks. Sometimes you spend weeks, even months preparing for one event, only to have it messed up by something unexpected.
No excuse to act out, but… some of us have to vent and attack people we’re frustrated with in public instead of private.
    A shame, really.

It started well with the dual guitars from Paisley and Urban. It ended well with the harmony of the Eagles.

    See you next year!!

This awards show is a crock! Keith Urban should have won Entertainer of the Year…Kenny is not an entertainer, just a glorified karaoke singer! At least Keith Urban can play the guitar and sing at the same time! I for one am highly disappointed at this years award show!

Wells seems the AMC knows how to pick the right ETOY. Kenny. And AS…sorry but still think you sound awful bitter and sorry you are not a fan of his. He is great guy. And he loves his fans and people around him. But he tries to be nice even when his private life is not going so great. Better then I can say for most.

What a show, WHat a night, WHat life!!!
It ain’t the country music we grew up on, heck, it ain’t even country music, until they sing some hokey song with a terrible melody and lame hook that’s been done 245 times before.
As many of the tired ones did tonight, like Brad & George and that pitiful song Brooks and I’ve been around long enough Dunn did with the hokey redneck!
What up with all the wordy songs that they barely could get out? Keith, Alan???
What up with Shania’s buffet eatin’ self??? The food bar is closed big ‘un!
Nuff said, I gotta git’ back to the party!

I am a huge fan of country music. However the background music of the bands WAS SO LOUD it was rare that you could even hear the words the great singers were singing. Doesn’t anyone in the “control room” listen to what is happening. PLEASE CHANGE THIS BEFORE NEXT YEAR! If I didn’t know the wonderful words to Carrie Underwood’s lovely tribute/song, that wouldn’t have even been discernable! Thanks!

    Overall..this year’s CMAs were OK.

Carrie- vocal’s on ‘Just a Dream’ amazing compared to most of the performances. I think she definitely deserved FVOTY
Trace, Lady A, Sugarland, Brad, Miranda- awesome performances!
Kenny- song was really long.. I was bored. I’m tired of the same ‘beach’ music you keep coming up with.
Taylor- sounded nervous or something..the set and dancers were pretty cool, but she just sounded off last night.
Martina- Not my favorite choice of song, but she’s still got the best pipes out there!
Reba- got a little robbed in that song, but i liked the parts i could hear.
Kid Rock-I’m a bit tired of listening to all summer long on practically every radio station, but it’s still good.

Really the only thing that made my night, was seeing Shania back on stage. She’s the reason I started liking country music in the first place. So it’s awesome to have you back!

are you kidding me carrie was just as off as everyone else!!taylor band was louder than her, If she louder like last than you guys say she is screaming and not singing no she sings a little lower for love story and most of you people jump down her back. for the most part I thought she was one of the best!!!!!!

This was one of the best awards shows - There was more entertainment this time!(YEE HAW!) Carrie, you have the poise of a grown woman and you were stunning in your numerous outfits. BUT I sure wish Travis Tritt could have been there. :)

I enjoyed the show and some comments here, have to agree tired of KC same style music. I think they Taylor needs more practice singing. It would have been great to have Jewel there instead of in the commercials. And finally there is the Gorgeous Shania without that huge Rock she used to wear on her left hand, she seemed a little sad to me. Girl We NEED YOU BACK!!!!

I enjoyed the CMA’s, somewhat. I am wondering when it will go back to honoring those with achievments from the year rather than a damn popularity contest. Taylor did a great job and I was really disappointed that she didn’t get album of the year. THE YOUNG WOMAN IS FREAKIN’ TALTENDED!!! She is such a good role model, not to mention, so much respect for the industry. I’m am SERIOUSLY ready for Kenny to either reinvent himself already or for someone to remind him theres more to him that the damn Carribean.

i watched the country music awards, and to tell u the truth i did not like it at all, ,, not one bit of country in none of the artist songs, how can they call them selves country artisits, that is what i would like to know,,,,, the artists are yelling into the mics and not singing at all, and too much rock and roll, for it is COUNTRY NOT ROCK AND ROLL,, and i would like to see more Country music as it was in the past years,, i do belive it is out there, , , even martina was good, but she also was yelling into her mic, seems like, not singing, i have heard her sing and she does a great job , but not during the awards this time, as the other did, alan jackson, was not bad but could do better, and i thought that the country music association had a dress code,, , i do not guess they do by the way the singers dressed, aweful
