2008 CMT Music Awards Show -- Part Two

9:12 -- We had to break it into another post because of all of your great comments! Keep em' coming kids and there will be lots more to come...
9:15-- Sugarland just won for Duo Video of the Year for "Stay". She cried in the video...will she cry on stage tonight? I guess that not eating and push-ups really worked (see Sugarland's show prep videos at CMT.com if you don't know what I'm talking about!).
9:20-- We're here with the great actor Tim Daly. Go ahead Tim... "I put my glasses on so that Tom Arnold wouldn't be so insecure so he could live out his pathetic fantasy of becoming me. I say this sincerely. I'm so glad that I came here...cause this is huge. There's an entire world that I don't know about that is in my own country. I gotta come back here and figure out this whole Nashville thing. And this is interesting trivia... A producer in Nashville contacted me about 15 years ago and wanted me to come here and make a demo record after I wrote some songs for this TV movie I did where I played David Koresh. Another thing I find is that I actually get somewhat aroused when I see cool guitars... I love guitars. Send me free ones. Crystal Bernard if you're out there...I miss you and so do a lot of people here in Nashville. Okay, I'm done."
9:27 -- We're thinking of changing the name of this blog to CMT's Stream of Consciousness.
9:32 -- Video of the Year... The big one! And the winner is Taylor Swift for "Our Song"! You like her, You really like her!
9:33 -- Well that looks like that's about it...no wait! Could it be? Waiting in the wings...Here she is, the "All-American Girl" herself... Carrie Underwood!
9:36 -- Well folks, the show might be over...but I'm not done talking yet. Tom Arnold's still here and I'm not leaving till Tom's gone. Stay tuned for some post-show action...
9:42 -- Jack Ingram just finished up some of his photos and stopped by for quick hello during his good-bye... "Well...I'm on my way out, the last buckle has been given, and me and my wife and my friends are going out to party. I'm gonna go steal my buckle back from Robert Plant...unless Alison Krauss is wearing it and then my wife can steal it."
9:46 -- Well that's it kids! Your 2008 CMT Music Awards. It's been a stone soul picnic. Keep'er twixt the ditches and be careful out there. I'm going to chase down Jack Ingram's limo... Adios. This is Shane Caldwell signing off...and Jen's fingers.

josh says:
miley’s voice i believe sounded horrible tonight!!
JOE H says:
Someone needs to tell Kenny that a guitar is more than just a stage prop. That or he needs to learn more than just one chord to his own song.
Neal says:
SUGARLAND IS TOTALLY AWESOME!!!
Mike W says:
What happen to the dresses year they look trashy. I have nothing wrong with hot women but they shouldn’t look trashy. Kids look up to them. I don’t want our country stars to end up like Britney Spares showing everthing they have.
Haley says:
i lovelovelove TAYLOR SWIFT!
soooo glad she won and she was ah-mazing!
super glad Sugarland won too.
wow.
Miley cannot sing at all!
Neal says:
VIDEO OF THE YEAR IS “STAY” BY SUGARLAND!!
Lynna D. says:
I don’t think it is just Miley’s voice - all the artists sound horrible when they are singing. I am disappointed in the sound quality this year!
Mike W says:
I agree with the Josh Miley voice was terrible. What happen?
Kaye says:
Okay what was up with the girl that ran up on stage with Toby Keith - was that planned or not???? I have to say I think LeeAnn Rimes looked terrible tonight in her too short dresses!!!!
Doc says:
I have to agree with Mike W about the dresses this year there are a few that are rather inappropriate considering the fan base for most of the newer artists
bobby says:
can anyone tell me what keith urban and brooks and dunn sang?
was it raise the barn?
Haley says:
she honestly just can’t sing.
saw her live…wasnt good at all
Mike W says:
What was deal with security and the girl running up to Toby Keith. It looked like she was suspose to be there she fit into the song.
Haley says:
yeah raise the barn
bobby says:
cool. thanks
Neal says:
IF MILEY IS MAKING ALL THAT MONEY SINGING LIKE THAT I NEED TO GIVE UP MY JOB AND HEAD TO NASHVILLE…I SOUND LIKE A DYING COW IN A HEY STORM AND THAT WOULD SOUND BETTER THAN WHAT SHE DID TONIGHT..
Miranda says:
This show was awesome but I don’t understand why snoop dog came out WEIRD?!!!!!!!!!!!!
Amanda Emery says:
Anybody totally ready for Can You Duet? I am pumped!
Haley says:
YAY!!!!
TAYLOR SWIFT VIDEO OF THE YEAR!!!!
Mike W says:
Taylor Swift is smokin HOT
Doc says:
Can you Duet should prove to be rather interesting
bream says:
I thought the reaction of the crowd to Snoop Dog was aweful!!! I was embarrassed!!! How could we, anyone… Im shocked and ashamed of the crowd tonight. As for me, I couldnt even tell you one song he has … but I do know any “human” deserves better than that.
And we “judge” rap…. what a joke… That was a sad moment for country music. So sad
Kaye says:
Okay I love Kenny - his song was just awesome!!! And I love that CMT is donating money to charities!!! How great is that!
sam says:
was that girl staged or what if not secruity took there time
Samantha says:
O my gosh!!! That is os exciting for everyone the Awards were amazing. It’s awesome to be a country girl!!!! Right on CMT!!!
Kaye says:
Oh my - Carrie Underwood - she is just fantastic!!!!!! And she is so beautiful. I love this song!!!! But I have to agree the songs have not sounded good at all. Do they make that many changes in the studio when they make the records???
Doc says:
Well you don’t have any backround noise in the studio but I think it might have something to do with the audio set up tonight, cause everyone has sounded off
Neal says:
HOW MANY OTHER AWARD SHOWS DONATE MONEY LIKE THAT…CMT YOU ARE IN A CLASS ALL BY YOURSELF!!!! I LOVE CMT!!!
Storm & Phoenix says:
Miley sounds better than that on the radio but she really did sound horrible tonight! Toby Keith’s jumper was definately hot, she improved the song and they should have let her stay. What was up with Paula Abdul’s dress? It looked like Spiderman swallowed silver. The dresses were too short and very disappointing.
chris says:
We expect so much of them b/c they’re famous, but they get nervous up on stage like all of us would and it affects their voice.
Kaye says:
Did anyone ever figure out about the girl that jumped on stage with Toby????
Doc says:
The Dresses were a common disappointment tonight
Janel says:
did Chuck Wicks win anward
Kaye says:
What was the name of the song that Kenny sang???
Margie says:
I think Bucky Covington should have won.
josh says:
if i was miley, i think i absoultely would be embaressed tonight based on my performance. how can anyone compare her concerts to the beatles
jesse says:
that was the worst “country” show i ever saw. where was the country? the wannabes now call themselves country. not for my dollar. “country ain’t country no more”
chris says:
I can’t belive Taylor Swift beat out so many well established country singers. good for her!
Jen says:
taylor swift was better than carrie underwood, martina mcbride, miranda lambert, brad paisley, kenny chesney and sugarland? really? i find that impossible to believe.
chris says:
I think she draws a younger crowd that is more likely to log in and vote.
Brian says:
CMT, please take some time to make the sound at least bearable in the future. Ladies, you do not have to look sluttish to be appealing…many of the wardrobes left something to be desired!
James says:
I believe that Billy ray and Miley Cyrus was a great choice for a host and would like to see that in the future.
Cindy says:
What happen to the Johnny Cash Visionary Award??? Are we no longer awarding people for doing good?
Neal says:
I WISH VINCE GIL WOULD COME BACK AND BE THE HOST OF THE NEXT CMT AWARD SHOW…HE IS JUST A NATURAL!!
James says:
I believe that Billy ray and Miley Cyrus was a great choice for a host and would like to see that again in the future. Hooray for Taylor Swift. You go babe keep it up.
tina says:
people. people
DONT YOU REALISE THERE IS SUCH A THING CALLED AUTOTUNE?? they use AUTOTUNE in the studio. this is all a facade. these people really have no talent. the only reason they succeed is because they look good on camera and you idiots buy into it. the only REAL talent tonight onstage was allison krauss and robert plant and they didnt perform! (okay jennifer nettles IS talented) but most of the others, nah, not really. they dont even write their own songs. when are you people going to stop feeding the machine.
i miss ole time country.
i miss loretta
i miss johnny
this is bullshit
brutus1562 says:
miley is 15 and a kid pop star, she tried not to show it but she had to be intimidated… taylor does rock, seen her in small venues twice great performer connects w/fans, i’m very happy for her, and she writes EVERY ONE of her own songs
Chuck says:
What a disappointment!
A. Wrong hosts. They fumbled thru the whole thing.
B. Wrong agenda. Obviously not planned well.
C. After we say thank you, where do we go? No one knew!
D. Bad accoustics for a music show.
E. Worst of all, Carrie Underwood’s song was almost
forgotten then cut short.
F. Now I know why I watch GAC.
tina says:
so what?
she’s a teenager.
SHE SELLS RECORDS BECAUSE SHE LOOKS LIKE A MODEL AND SHE’S AN “OK” singer!!!!!! that’s all it takes ya’ll! come on over to nashville ! if you look like a model and you can half way carry a tune YOUVE GOT IT MADE!
leslie says:
Carrie Underwood was horrible tonight. I’m certainly glad Taylor took the wind our of her sails. The fame has gone to her head . I love to see down to earth, beautiful Taylor.
go girl!
brutus1562 says:
autotune?? how about spell check… people people … you’re probably a karoake star, eh ? tina… try singing one song, in front of peers, who are legends, you must have no soul… taylor is a genuine kid in awe of what the fans do for her, try one of her shows she’s very comfortable out there
tina says:
brutus i do agree that taylor is a good performer. sure, she’s great. a great performer but she has no substance. no core. she is a beautiful , beautiful girl but she doesnt have much talent as far as im concerned. its my opinion. im entitled to it.
you have no idea what goes on behind closed doors in the studio. AUTOTUNE- COVERUPS, ETC.
tina says:
um yeah.
and whhhherre were the legends?
sitting at home watching and wondering what the hell happened to country music.
well this isnt the acms this caters to the young uns- which is fine.
brutus1562 says:
i’ll admit, i am a fan of taylor… her songs are definetly high school songs… but irregardless, her cd is quite good and i’ll reserve judgement on anyone ’til they follow up… as far as legends, hank williams jr.?, martina mcbride has more class in her big toe then most anyone, don’t you think?, naomi judd, pretty much old time country or am i mistaken? tim mcgraw would be a legend if he wasn’t alive, right? but you are right, everyone is entitled to their opinion and to voice that opinion
brutus1562 says:
you can say i have no idea, but then again, you don’t even know me, do you?
RICKY says:
No offensive Ms. Swift, but I don’t get why you are so popular. Sugarland is awesome though! Yay! I voted for them and Carrie Underwood, a real talent. I hope both will be around for a long time.
RICKY says:
AMEN…TINA! I agree.
Cherry says:
That was the worse excuse for a “country” awards show I’ve ever seen. Hardly any of the music was country. “Bob Your Head”? What was Rascall Flatts thinking when they recorded this song. Toby Keith trying to rap? And yup, after not watching awards shows for over 2 yrs, it was still the same tired click. And for country people being so friendly, how they treated Snoop Dog was embarassing. I was embarassed to be a country music fan. They should rename this award show to the Pop and rock awards.
brutus1562 says:
i guess you don’t understand why the water is wet and the sky appears to be blue either, do you album sales, downloads, popular votes from fans, not croanies resistant to change… taylor is popular, ALL the #’s bear that out, only time will tell for any of them, but, for real, come on, if not for american idol, you wouldn’t even know who carrie was, you know how many talented “voices
‘ are out there, ms. swift writes her own lyrics AND vocal lines and hooks, still i’ll reserve critique til the next one, wipe the tears off your collective computers
brutus1562 says:
i think people were chanting “snoop” then he just stood there and did nothing, said nothing, what do you expect, i thought they were waiting for something funny or outragious and nothing happened, somebody dropped the ball
Pam says:
What’s up with that woman that jumped on stage with Toby Keith? Was that real or staged? Either way, if you are going to make a spectacle of yourself, wear antiperspirant… she had sweat stains.. YUK!
PamR says:
I thought Miley sounded really off key…as well as, several others! Billy Ray sounded fine…so was it the acoustics or was she and some of the others having a bad night?
brutus1562 says:
i’ve heard miley live on nick or disney award show, i think she’s a studio baby, she jumps around like a freak, but tonite she just stood there, and she does a lot of shows. she might have strained vocal chords, her technique isn’t a very well trained technique, no real chops
Jennifer says:
This was one horrible show! Fan voted? Gimme a break, if it was truely fan voted Keith AND Kenny would have won something! I’m glad I spent the whole show voting for Kenny even if he didn’t win.
Some of the artists who weren’t country before now have surprisingly good songs, so let’s just wait and give Snoop’s “country song” a chance, then judge. It’s not going to be any genres if this kind of thing keeps happening, it will just be music.
Jennifer says:
Oh and fyi Kenny Chesney performed Never Wanted Nothing More and it is on the Just Who I Am:Poets & Pirates album.
Angela says:
What was the song that Toby Keith sang? And what WAS with that girl jumping on stage? o.O
Miley was really bad tonight…blehh
Dlite says:
What happend? Did they 4get 2 introduce carrie? Worse award show ive seen! When did we stop rewarding deserving artist?
Laurie says:
Diana Degarmo looked pretty tonight in her red carpet pictures. Hopefully she’s back next year to sing a song because her album should be out by then.
Charlotte says:
Billy Ray & Miley definitely needed some coaching this evening - terrible hosting. I agree with Josh - Miley’s voice wasn’t on track either. The show was definitely at the bottom of my list for the best entertainment - I’ve seen much better!!! Also, the best was saved for the last - Carrie Underwood. Obviously, this was Taylor’s nite; however, I haven’t seen her win any grammys lately. Carrie’s performance was the best of the night!!!! CMT better come up with something better next year, or I most certainly will not be watching!!
karen says:
i glad carrie underwood didn’t win. it give other a chance. love trace. a lot of people won who should have. shame however to much rock in country today. at least sugar land land sang a true country son. live music is different. i didn’t watch it all i thought the way some were dressed was awful. show could have been better.. milley was getting over strep throat. love her and billy ray. show has been much better. have they heard it is county music.. thing about music is we can love it, and like others. snoop should have been treated better. johnny cash amoung other have touched mannnnnnnny peoples heart. so we all need to remember that.
Sue says:
The only thing good about this years awards where looking at all the cute male performers. I was very disapointed with the host also. And it figures that girl jumping up when toby keith was performing. He did not look too happy. And then finally some fat security guy comes around. Get with it people. Toby might not come back!! But he was still fun to look at!! YUMMY!!!!
Fank says:
was the girl that came up onstage for toby planned or spontanious
Rory says:
The show wasn’t the best, but it was good to see a bunch of the folks I like, but was dissapointed that I didn’t see George Strait or Alabama out there. Next year, dump Tom Arnold, Paula Abdul and Snoop. I mean, really folks.
Mindy says:
I thought the show was great. I’m bummed that Carrie Underwood didn’t win. However her performance was awesome!!!
Nancy says:
the show was a total let down. I am highly disturbed that kelly pickler won an award…and who told bucky covington he could sing? sad that the american idol folks have taken over country. the talented artists/songwriters (dierks, little big town, keith) seem to get overshadowed by people who are famous only because of AI. I’m ready for the show to end.
patty ford says:
i have never watched this show until last night, and now wished i never had. i turned it off when the bachelor came on. i thought that miley cyrus looked retarded and acted the part well, and billy ray acted like a stupid father. most of the time when you watch these country music award shows you know that the hosts’ part is rehearsed, but it doesn’t come off that way. well, you could tell last night that it was very poorly rehearsed and it showed. the entertainers were great and that was the only thing that saved the show. mileys’ arms are too long, her legs are too long and she just looks like none of her parts go together. my granddaughter loves her, but for the life of me i can’t see why. i think she is just a spoiled kid making too much money. the only performer i thought was not worth a crap was taylor swift. i mean, good grief, walking around in a formal dress and then walking up on stage barefooted carrying her shoes. i thought we were trying to make country music better, not like a bunch of hicks running around with no shoes on. where is her class? i will not watch this next year, that is if it makes it around for another year. maybe it won’t.
George says:
Wow! Congratulations to the marketers behind Taylor Swift. It’s amazing how they can package a young girl with below average singing talent and get her to where she is today. With the exception of Miley Cyrus, Taylor was by far the worst vocalist of the night. Of course, 13 year old girls and boys don’t care. It’s all about the image regardless of talent.
Rmtrocker says:
I do not know about the general public but I found the awards somewhat embarassing. The funny banter between the artists presenting awards seem to fall very short of their punchlines and the sound quality of the performances was missing something. It seemed all their voices were being held back by either the artists themselves or the microphones. The music sounded good but they all sounded flat. Miley sounded off, Taylor’s voice was weak, Paisley wasn’t strong and their acceptance speeches were like they have never won an award before and were lost in what to say. I hope they can smooth out the performance issue for next year and as for the funny banter, try not to work so hard on it because some entertainers are just not capable of pulling off your funny dialogue.
I definitely feel there needs to be more recognition for the pioneers of country particularly when one of them passes away. Country music should never ever forget their roots. And please CMT do not get stuck in the Grammy mode where you recognized “FAD” talent and ignore the bands and artists who have sold their soul and bleed country music for all of their lives and do it everyday.
ruweoiruo says:
OMG. She is very gorgeous. I was surprised to see her nice profile on a site with hot pics and videos. It seems called ‘ M a r r y M i l l i o n a i r e . C o m’. Was she dating with someone? Is she single?
Aubrey says:
So did anyone else notice that Snoop Dog was being BOOED?!?! I can’t believe they would bring him on a show like this. How pitiful. And I also can’t believe that Taylor Swift won video of the year over Kenny Chesney. They brought way too many people on the show this year NOT associated with country music, which just totally ruined it for me. Bobby Brown? Snoop Dog? Come on… you just shouldn’t mix rap and country. CMT… better luck next year.
Aubrey says:
Oh and Rmtrocker… I couldn’t agree with what you said more!! Totally true..
>>And please CMT do not get stuck in the Grammy mode where you recognized “FAD” talent and ignore the bands and artists who have sold their soul and bleed country music for all of their lives and do it everyday
Judge says:
I know the CMT video awards are picked by the fans. Thank God for the fans for some of these winners. Let me first say that I am a huge Bucky Covington fan and loved his small portion of his song. I have seen him many times and he always sounds great live, but what impressed me the most about Bucky was the fact that he played the guitar that he was presented for Christmas from his fan club. That speaks volumes to us. Bucky may not have won an award but he thanked us for our support, in the most unique way ever, by playing “our” guitar. One thing the some of the ‘winners’ need to rememeber “always thank your fans!” because without them…your back at sonic.
Looking back on some of the awards that were given…before long CMT Award will be compared to the Kids Choice Awards!
Benjamin says:
Are you people idiots or what? You do realize they were saying Snooooooooooop and not booing.
Benjamin says:
And by the way, why is no one complaining about Kelly Pickler? Kelly Pickler…are you serious??????
Cindy says:
You guys this was the CMT!!! awards. CMT, VIDEO. VIDEOS played on CMT. When have the oldies been played? ie johnny cash, Loretta, etc. This is for the current NOW, happening videos. So I think they did a good job at that. And who won.
The thing I did NOT like was the joining up of singers with others. IT’s LAME. We hate it. We don’t care if Waylon is with brad. We just want to hear Brad, sing HIS song. I wish these awards shows would get over that.
I don’t think Vince Gill has ever hosted the CMT’s.
Remember..this is NOT the ACM, CMAs..this was CMT VIDEO AWARDS!!!!
hilary says:
Okay, I’m honestly not a HUGE country music fan but I do love a FEW of them–to be precise, Carrie Underwood (absolutely gorgeous) and Keith Urban (what a hottie). I think they are actually talented, unlike some of the people who “sang” last night. I just don’t get it at all . . . what is the big deal about Taylor Swift? Is anyone actually listening to her? She’s not good and it wasn’t just last night. Every time I’ve listened to her, she has been terrible. Thank God for the editing they can do for the artists’ CD’s to make them sound good. For the people on here who make negative comments about American Idol . . . who cares how these people came to be discovered & now well-known singers? Does it really matter? Either they’re good or they’re not. Look what AI has given us . . . Carrie, Daughtry, Kelly Clarkson, to name a few. I could honestly care less how Carrie Underwood was discovered. It wouldn’t matter because the fact is that SHE CAN SING! I’ve been to her concert and she was awesome & near flawless! I am disappointed she didn’t win anything last night but I understand that Taylor is the new “it girl” in country music. I just hope that people soon realize she’s not very good. I’m tired of hearing about her. It’s kind of annoying. I could stand it if she was more talented like Carrie, Faith or Martina, but she’s not. And I’ve NEVER heard Rascal Flatts sound good either. I don’t understand why they are such a big deal. I guess I just don’t really get it! Feel free to explain this to me. :)
hilary says:
Oh, also forgot Sugarland. I cringe everytime I hear her voice. Am I the only one who can’t stand her voice?? I think they have good songs but they would be much better if her voice was different!
Sue says:
My only complaint about the show was the back-up singer with the house band. Talk about a sick cow in a hail storm! She honestly ruined the songs!
aMom says:
I completely agree with Chuck…. Hosting was HORRIBLE!!! A has-been and a Britney wanna-be… wheres the country in that.. Bring on Brooks & Dunn or Jeff Foxworthy… as far as dresses- blah… sick of Taylor Swift.. shes not that cute.. Love, Love, Love Kenny Chesney and Carrie Underwood… The “oldies” deserved more respect lastnight.. I mean come on.. taylor swift beating out paisley and chesney.. stop allowing your middle schoolers to vote…
Nancy says:
I am not complaining about how the AI people were discovered, my complaint is that they have no talent (Carrie Underwood aside). Kelly Pickler??? Please give me a break! Bucky Covington?? I just saw him live two weeks ago and he was a disaster. My problem is not that AI is a vehicle for talented people, the problem is when the fame people get on that show translates into a recording contract, videos, etc. when they are absolutely talentless. There are plenty of non-Idol singers who suck (Rascal Flatts for one) and I can’t understand why people support them either. :-)
Cindyi says:
My 11 and 12 year old sons love country music. They watched because Miley was hosting. We were all disappointed at how disrespectful she was to her Dad and even more disappointed in her performance. She’s a kid pop star not a country music star. We all enjoyed Toby Keith, Sugarland, Keith Urban…
hilary says:
completely agree with you Nancy! :)
bob from va. says:
i don’t know who wrote and produced this piece of crap, but whoever it was, should never be hired again. number one, billy ray cyrus was terrible. this was like amature night. most of the songs sucked, the jokes sucked and i don’t know if anyone noticed, there were more commercials on this crummy show than the superbowl.where was the country in this so called country music awards show. don’t worry, after this flop, there’s only one way to go. UP.
George says:
Hey Hillary. The answer is STUDIO MAGIC. There are singers who cannot sing ON KEY LIVE. Perfect examples, Taylor Swift, the lead singer of Raschal Flats, (Did you see the other award shows where he sang a duet with Jamie Foxx? Or when he tried to sing Hotel California. They were two of the worst live performances in television history.) And there’s that guy who sings, as they say in the business, flat as a flounder. That would be Kenny Chesney.
I don’t know if you sing, Hillary, but if you look decent, come on over to my studio and I can tweak your voice so you sound as good or better than Taylor Swift does. No, you won’t sound good live either, but the cd will be listenable.
The only thing you’re a little off base on is saying the lead singer of Sugarland is not that good. Actually her voice is REALLY good and she can sing live. I think you probably don’t like the way she pronounces some of her words in a countryfied manner. I thought the teaming up of Sugarland and Little Big Town to sing Life in a Northern Town was the vocal highlight of the night.
chicka says:
I thought the way Carrie was prancing around during her performance was ridiculous!! It looked so stupid! Congratulations to Taylor for winning both Female and Video of the year. She definately deserves it, and as far as I know, she didn’t have to go through American Idol to get where she is today! By the way, I’ve never been a fan of Idol. I will also agree that the dresses were WAYYYYY too short, and very sleazy-looking. I understand that LeAnn’s were that way for a reason-that is how they had it in the video. But otherwise…damn. Put some clothes on. And LeAnn’s dress when she went to accept her award, looked awful. She was wayyyy too pale to wear silver! Get a fake tan or something!!
shari says:
are we going to find out what was up with the girl who jumped on stage with toby? how do we find out? i guess we have to wait for his video on cmt. whst was the name of the song anyway?
chicka says:
I agree with George that Life In A Northern Town was one of, if not the best performance of the night. All of them did an outstanding job. I will also stick up for Jennifer as I saw SugarLand live in concer, although it was when they were a trio. Get over her countried pronunciation, she IS from Georgia (please correct me if I’m wrong on that, as I’m sure you all will) as far as I know. The only thing is that I HATE when people record and you hear the sound of them taking in a deep breath. Oh well.
Nancy says:
shari, the name of the song he sang was “She’s a hottie” not sure about the girl who jumped on stage. I agree with others about the Sugarland/LBT/Jake Owen performance, it was great. Keith Urban was great too. I LOVE LOVE little big town…talk about a great live show.
Joyce-Covington,Ga. says:
i think the best part of the show was the opening with Trace and his family, and the duet with Faith and Tim.I’m sorry to all the Taylor Swift’s fan’s but,the girl CAN NOT sing!I was sorry to see Carrie Underwood was almost forgotton at the end.She is a very good singer and should of won.I agree Jeff Foxworthy should host next year. And I do think Rascall Flat can sing and is a great group. And Sugerland also.Has anyone figured out what was up with the girl who ran on stage while Toby was singing?
tim says:
What was this years theme, “Smart-mouth teeny bopper goes trailer trash”?
I thought the entire program was dreadful and an huge embarrasment. The CMA was portrayed to the lowest common denominator. I thought at first that it was a rehearsal gone wrong, but instead of getting right, it got progressively worse.
What in the hell happened to our country music? Was this some kind of a sick communist joke?
Every part was a disaster: design, sound, lighting, commentary, masters of ceremony (?), timing, and who dressed these people?
Whomever is responsible for this disaster should be required to wear a dead chicken tied around their neck until it rots off and then fired.
Texas Girl says:
CMT, never ever ever let Billy Ray and Miley host again. And I agree about the dresses……..have some class, just because you weight nothing, doesn’t mean you wear nothing….I was very disappointed and I LOVE country music…GO SUGARLAND!!
Texas Girl says:
Let me clarify, I was very disappointed in the whole show, even with some of my favorite singers performing, it was a HUGE let down.
Taylor is much better recorded than live……and her striptease act wasn’t very cute……as for her and Carrie prancing around stage……the choreographer should be fired!! That was awful!!!
The performance by Sugarland, LBT, and Josh was AWESOME!!!!
Dee says:
To those complaining about Carrie’s “prancing”. Seriously?! Go back and rewatch her performance on You Tube - she slowly walked down the steps, slowly walked across the stage and then sang the song… flawlessly. I’m not a huge fan of her performance skills - but what part of her performance could be construed as “prancing”?
hilary says:
Let me clarify . . . it’s not that I think Sugarland is bad or anything . . . I just don’t like the SOUND of her voice. It’s just a personal preference . . . little too twangy for me. I’m sure she really CAN sing great but it’s just the SOUND of her voice that I can’t get past. And I realize there’s really nothing she can do about that b/c I’m sure it’s a product of where she was born & raised. :) I do agree with the comments re: Carrie prancing around on stage. I thought it was weird; however, I still love her & still thought she had one of the best vocals of the night . . . as always. And I thought she looked very classy & not too overexposed as some of the others did.
JD says:
In my opinion Carrie Underwood’s performance was very lackluster. She looked like she was bored and therefore I was bored watching it (nevermind how beautiful she is).
I hope that winning all these awards doesnt go to Taylor Swift’s head. She is a good talent with a bright future, but sometimes young stars lose their heads a little bit when they get thrust into the spotlight.
As for the Toby Keith girl running on stage thing. If you watched it then you should know that it was not planned. Toby looked pissed. The head of security should probably be looking for another job.
shannon says:
Hey, Cindy- It was HANK WILLIAMS, JR. singing with Brad. Waylon Jennings???? Don’t you know Waylon died several years ago??? And you say you are a country music fan….I laugh!!!!
Bradsgirl says:
I have heard my sentiments on last nights show voiced repeatedly throughout these comments. I too was very disappointed in this show and would hardly call it entertaining. I understand that it is sponsored by CMT and is meant to showcase the popular videos and stars being shown on their network. I am a longtime Country fan, however, and am saddened to think that this is what Country has become. If I were not a fan and had tuned into this not knowing anything about the genre or those who have built it up on their talent and hard work, I would turn it off and tune it out permanently. My thoughts on the show itself are:
Miley Cyrus: I’m sure the sassy remarks to Dad were designed by the writers to be funny. I don’t believe anyone thought they were, especially those with ‘tweens who soak up anything she says and does like sponges and try to emulate her at every turn. As far as her talent goes…can you say “the Disney marketing machine”.
Billy Ray Cyrus: I am not going to comment on his talent. That has been stated before. I do think that he needs to take a good long look at his “little girl”. If my 15 year old was even considering wearing any of the outfits Miley had on last night, we would have a serious problem. Money is not everything and parents can still say no to “pop stars”
Leann Rimes: What was that?! I think it is a shame that a young woman who showed such promise and the ability to save this genre from dying is poisoning it herself. I was so disgusted with her actions and choice of wardrobe. I know that the outfits worn in the performance were those from the video, however, the dance moves were a bit much for what (because of Miley and Taylor Swift) was a show watched by many families. I believe the only thing missing in her dance routine was a pole. You are too talented to be trashy Leann.
As far as the rest, I agree the sound, writing, pretty much everything was 3rd rate and cheesy. Too Hollywood to be called Country. I did think it was interesting that the Hollywood actress (Nicole Kidman) was among the most modestly dressed there. I know she is expecting, but I have a feeling Leann would have wore the Silver number even if she was.
OK, I have rambled and ranted enough. Let’s hope someone at CMT reads some of these and sees what the fans really think.
Troy says:
Shannon- I’m really glad somebody corrected Cindy. Waylon Jennings? Seriously? That was the better part of the show and a great addition with Hank Jr. singing the last half with Brad Paisley.
I must concur with the majority of everyone that Billy Ray + Miley were terrible hosts, and it appeared if nothing was rehearsed. Taylor Swift/Carrie Underwood/and Miley definitely pushed the sexy/slutty envelope but overall I think Taylor looked the best. That girl that ran on stage with Toby made Toby look a little mad, but he signaled for he to dance and I thought she improvised pretty well, espcially for the song he was singing. Agree? Wonder what his thoughts were on the subject.
At the end, did Billy Ray announce “what better way the end the show than with Kelly Underwood? I DVRed the show, replayed it several times and I am pretty certain he called her Kelly!!!
Adriana says:
Well, I was very disappointed after watching the awards show last night. Miley was a bit rusty with the hosting but Billy Ray was pretty good. Taylor Swift needs to learn that you do not by any means remove your shoes unless you want to look like trash at an awards show no matter what she says Faith Hill told her. In addition, Taylor Swift’s winning video consisted of her singing in pretty dresses, while Sugarland’s Stay was her singing into the camera, the raw emotion in the video deserved recognition. Taylor while shd did have a good song, did not have the best video. Also, Sugarland can actually sing live. Taylor, while very adorable and down to earth when recieving awards, can’t sing live at all. To the comment about Rascal Flatt’s lead singer and his performance with Jamie Foxx, read a paper. Gary LeVox had been struggling with throat problems for a while. There even had to be a cancelled show last year at the Houston rodeo because he had bronchitis. Jamie Foxx saw this and tried to help him out by taking more of the lead vocals. The ending lines with Miley and Bily Ray were very shaky and Carrie Underwood’s performance was also not given enough credit.
George says:
Adriana,
I just called it like I saw it. There always seems to be an excuse for Gary LeVox (not his real last name, translated, “the voice” get it?) A guy, with below average vocals changing his name to “the voice”, what an ego. Just because you read it in the paper doesn’t make it so. What happened during his performance of Hotel California? Didn’t see it? Check out youtube and decide for yourself. The song he sang last night was not sung. It was recited, more like a rap song. Sorry, but I think, live, he just doesn’t have the chops.
Kim says:
My husband did terrible at the award show last night. I mean that song I’m still a guy is so pathetic. Did you see how we weren’t sitting together last night? I didn’t even look at him once except when I made a face. All those nice comments about that I wrote online aren’t even true! I mean that kissable dimple, how dumb is that? Brad even said we were getting devorced. I am so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!! The only reason I married him was for the money!!!!!!!!!! Who would marry that piece of trash?
Lexy says:
I can’t believe Taylor Swift won video of the year. Don’t get me wrong, “Our Song” is a cute video, but how in the world did she outbeat Kenny and Brad? I mean, i’m in middle school and i didn’t even vote for her. I am a HUGE Brad Paisley fan and i thought he defenitley deserved to win video of the year. Overall this was an embarassing night to be a country music fan.
Bob L says:
I love country..and the CMT awards have always been the best…. Last night however was awful…. all the schtick by Miley her dad… and presenters…. stupid mostly.. really took away the historical usual class of the program…
Nikki says:
Does anybody know the song that sugarland and little big town sang?
George says:
Nikki,
The song is titled, “Life in a Northern Town”. The original was done by the English group, Dream Academy, back in the 1980s.
Bob L says:
… another thing I wanted to say is that teenie boppers may be the only voters (some of us work) but they are not the only listeners or buyers of CD’s. The winners were mostly poor singing mousekateers… lacking manners, style… and yes… respect.. (Miley).
By the way…. the “C” in CMA means Country…. not come one come all…rap bebop or rock…
Bennie says:
I used to just “live” for the CMA award shows. If I
wanted to hear rock stars sream and wiggle I’d watch
MTV. It’s a disgrace to ruin country musc award shows
like last nights. LeeAnn, you should be ashamed of your-
self going on stage with a dress so short your underwear
(if you even wear any) could be seen! You used to be so
pretty and sweet; don’t change your image just because
you have grown up! Leave more to our imagination, please!!!Next CMA award show, PLEASE keep it country!!!
Countryboy says:
I really can’t say much about the show, I turned it off after the first three minutes, totally disgusted. Once again the suits at CMT have proven they know nothing about Country!
Nikki says:
thanks.
Nicolette says:
I thought the CMT awards was a HUGE disappointment! What on earth is anyone thinking (espcially her father who appeared with her!) allowing a 15 year old to wear such immodest, revealing dresses?! Even she clearly felt unconfortable - poor girl kept tugging at her dress throughout her performance, worried she might spill out,I’m sure!
Overall - the worst country awards show ever! Snoop Dogg?! Are you kidding me? Is anyone aware that he has been on trial for murder, owned his own pornographic film company and is an admitted habitual drug user?
I always looked forward to the country awards shows - even before I knew much about Country music - because of the good natured, God fearing, modest, and truly talented group represented. This has killed it for me.
It is clear that MTV, which owns CMT, is slowly but surely trying to instill their immoral, corruptive to children agenda into the country world now. Truly think of how much more risque’ CMT is now than when it first premiered. I guarantee you, before you know it, they are going to start pushing the homosexual agenda on CMT in some at first subtle, then more obvious way, as they have done with MTV and now VH1.
Keep that in mind always - MTV owns and manipulates CMT…
Adriana says:
George,
While I wasn’t at that concert, I have seen him live about 3 or 4 times now and each time he has been amazing. He, as well as the other two members, are very talented. They do deserve credit as they are amazing performers. I’m calling it like I’ve seen it… multiple times but, to each their own.
Bennie,
Leann is an adult now not the 13 year old girl she was when she started singing. Her first dress was a COSTUME. The second grey or silver one was short but again she is an adult and can wear what she wants. The dress was actually close fitting and not loose like the black dress Taylor wore which went to almost revealing heights at times in receiving her award. If anything was trashy it was Taylor Swift putting a face to the definition HICK by taking off her shoes and actually going up to stage like that.
All in all, still a very disappointing show
Mark says:
I enjoyed most of the performance. Really didn’t care who won. I thought the categories were made up to fit the videos. Not sure why Snoop was there - maybe in hopes of drawing a bigger audience to increase the bottom line. Cowboy Troy would have been better. I like hearing new artist play as they went to commercial - otherwise they get less airtime and i like to hear new music. Would love to know if the girl jumping on stage during Toby’s performance was staged. Even if it was I thought it was a high light. I could have done without the hosts. They need more rehearsals. I don’t understand why Miley is such a hot ticket - she’s okay but I wouldn’t spend my money to she her. Plus their (Billy & Miley) attempt at comedy sets a bad example for kids - not what I expect from CMT. I’d like to see VINCE GIL back.
Troy says:
Did anyone catch Billy Ray announcing Carrie Underwood as KELLY Underwood? “What a better way than to end the show with Kelly Underwood”? Not a big deal, but I just want to knoe if anyone else caught it. Yes!? No?!? Taylor Swift, no shoes? Not really that big of a deal? She acts her age, she seems pretty genuine. Rodney Carrington is hilarious!! I think guys like Rodney, Foxworthy, etc should host if they want to implement comedy into this bc Billy + Miley were truly terrible. Kelly Underwood? What!?
TJ says:
Maybe nobody was paying attention, but wasn’t Taylor Swift’s “Our Song” number one on CMT’s Top Twenty Countdown for a record-setting amount of weeks in the past year? I loved each of the artists and videos nominated, but it’s almost disturbing how people are so upset over Swift winning.
People making a big deal over the fact that she took her shoes off: For one, the girl explained + apologized when she was accepting the award. If she hadn’t taken them off and had been hobbling to/across the stage in the shoes, you *know* you’d be one of the first to make remarks. Finally, if you check her blog on myspace, she said that she’d ran into Faith Hill and that Faith had been the one to encourage her to take off her shoes. Of all things, that shows that even Faith Hill doesn’t care. Would you let it go?
To the people who are calling the women’s behavior/fashion decisions trashy: just like you have the freedom to post your thoughts here, they have the freedom to choose what they want to wear. Yes, they should probably consider that there are little girls looking up to them, but you aren’t their mother. If you dislike their clothes that much and don’t want to see it, then close your eyes or look away. If you have children and don’t want your kid influenced by it, then one: make sure you let your kid know you think it’s wrong (and) or turn off the TV.
Am I being simple minded or is that easy?
I don’t know. Maybe it’s just that people are expecting too much when they turn on an award show. Hasn’t it always been weak jokes, teary acceptance speeches, and unexpected mishaps? Nobody should ever watch an award show expecting to be entertained. The performances and skits are only to hold your attention.
There’s probably some deeper reason networks show these things, but I personally don’t feel like googling it right now. (hey, you feel free though, I suggest maybe “what’s the point of award shows”) I only watch to see who’s going to win, maybe it wouldn’t kill some others to do the same.
countrygrl:) says:
Amen, TJ. You are SO right. Taylor Swift is so young but is very talented. If you don’t like her well get over it and stop complaining about her. Who cares if she didn’t wear her shoes on stage. It’s a free country!!! I loved Keith Urban and Kenny. Taylor, keep up the GREAT work and don’t let a bunch of comments get ya down. You’re amazing!!!!
april says:
I LOVE sugarland!!! That was my favorite performance!!! :>
Leslie says:
Just as a reply to Tj, but the fact that the song itself was high on the charts isn’t the issue. “Our Song” is a good song when heard on her cd or on the radio. The video in itself was dull. A pretty girl in vaious pretty dresses singing. This is why many people are disappointed that won.
Also, she just cannot sing live at all which really makes you wonder if the way she sounds on her cd is her, or studio magic.
Ronald Wayne Jones says:
What does Bob That Head mean ? Giving these people awards is like putting a gold ring in a pig’s nose. Next year. if you need a judge, I know a pig judge, that works country fairs. I have never seen a “So Called Country” show (Nashville Bubble Gum Rock), where not one of the devils, thought to thank the “Good Lord”, for their good fortune. Did anyone else notice ? One more thing, that ugly gal showed her underwear. Does anyone realize these things are selling this slop to very young and impressionable children ? Does anybody care anymore ?
Ronald Wayne Jones says:
Does “Bob That Head” mean what I think it means ? These things are singing a song to little children about what I think it is about ? In Saudia Arabia, if you tried to sing something like that to their children, what do you think would happen ?
Ronald Wayne Jones says:
I think Kenny Chesney, and his band did a great job. At least in his song, he mentioned “The Good Lord”. His guitar players are top notch and did a throughly professional job. That tall girl, could not sing in “Key”, any-body ever hear of it ?
Leslie says:
whoa RW Jones, first bob that head, means to literally bob your head, like to the music. It isn’t supposed to have dirty connotations. It’s a song about working hard the entire week and then driving and relaxing bobbing you head along to the music that’s turned up all the way and having a good time. If they don’t want to thank God then that’s their decision and they really shouldn’t be criticized for it as not everyone in the world is christian. I don’t think you even are that into country if you couldn’t name the people that sang and instead called her “that tall girl.”
Kory says:
I thought the entire show was a train wreck.
Miley Cyrus is, perhaps, the least talented person in her position that I have ever seen. She cannot/doesn’t sing. She shouts. It sounds horrible. It’s like a little kid singing. It’s cute - for a while - and then reality hits and it’s not even cute anymore. It’s annoying.
Whoever the director of the show was should never work again. Way, way, way to much dead air time where no one knew which camera they should be looking into or what they should be doing next.
The sound quality was atrocious. It sounded like all the singers were using hollow mics or something. Brutal.
The worst thing was when Miley Cyrus shrieking like a school girl after Taylor Swift won the final award. Of course, what should we expect? She is just a school girl, which she should remain as for a while and get out of the business. She’s no good.
Kory says:
Not to mention that the dress Miley wore during her “vocal” performance made her look like a two-bit hooker.
Hardly appropriate for anyone, let alone a girl of her age.
Shameful!
Kim says:
I was soooo disappointed. I agree with a previous post that the show was a train wreck. Isn’t this supposed to be about COUNTRY music? Why would you have presenters like Tom Arnold, Jewel (I realize she has an album coming), Snoop Dog, Tim Daley, etc. when there are so many great COUNTRY artists that probably would have loved to have done that? There were so many great country artists that should have been represented that weren’t. I hope CMT will get it together before next years awards.
james s says:
Taylor Swift was so out of tune and uncoordinated. We were embarrassed for her and had to turn the channel. And how in the world is she nominated for Female Vocalist of the Year for the CMA’s? Seriously - if she wins over Martina or Carrie… that would be a joke and a slap in the face the other talented nominee’s.
Ben B says:
Basically it comes down to a couple things:
Bad (spend the extra 5 bucks and buy the rest of the fabric) dresses worn by young girls, either sound problems or major vocal practicing needs to be addressed, love your show but please practice your lines when you are going to host a huge awards ceremony, security quit gawking at all of the young ladies there to watch the show and do your job, oh and maybe one of the country music stars could donate 10 bucks to the random chick that pissed off Toby…she needs a lower shirt and much higher pants.
LETS TURN OVER CMT TO THE CARE OF CLEDUS T JUDD, HE WOULD BE BETTER THAN MTV!
Sandy says:
In response to Patty Ford;
I usually don’t post remarks on here unless I see something that just drives me insane and I just have to say something. When I first read Patty’s comment, I thought she was perhaps a young, jealous teenager. When I read she is a grandmother, I was appalled! This woman tore apart a 15 year old girl! Is your self esteem really that low that you have to pick apart a 15 year old? It is one thing to say the girl can’t sing, but to go on and say, “Mileys’ arms are too long, her legs are too long and she just looks like none of her parts go together.” I mean, come on! That’s just being cruel! I feel sorry for your poor grand daughter. God knows she won’t be perfect, but you’ll be there to tell her that I am sure. Teens have a hard enough time dealing with body issues without grandmothers putting in their two cents. Miley is beautiful!!! My daughter loves her and I’m okay with that. Quite a few of her songs have a good message in them and I don’t mind my daughter listening to them and soaking that message up.
Then you go on to say that Taylor Swift isn’t worth a crap. WOW!! The poor girls feet hurt. Taylor seemed very down to Earth. A girl her age is supposed to be carefree. Who cares that she didn’t wear her shoes up on stage. She at least brought them up with her.
I’m sorry, but you have a bad case of the grumpy grannies. You probably should go take your fiber and go back to bed. The world doesn’t need a grandma who likes to pick apart teenagers.
Cilla says:
haha!!! i love people’s comments.
The first thing i have to agree on is Miley sounded HORRIBLE. That was the worst performance i’ve ever heard. Like someone mentioned, i also kept thinking, what 15 year old wears that kind of a dress?
The hosting was bad. Idk if it was the shows fault or Billy Ray and Miley’s fault. In the end the long pause before introducing carrie. And the part where billy ray was like “where’s miley? miley? everybody chant with me miley!” was akward. Next time they shouldn’t put a 15 year old to host. Her dad was the one who did most of the hosting and her parts were either really short or retarded. Like the part were she was like texting for five minutes and then makes the comment about how she is the one who pays the bills. That was probably the writers and was the dumbest thing ever.
I think the best performances of the night were Sugarland/LBT/Jake Owen and Faith Hill/Tim McGraw. The performances were very simple performances, no fire, explosions, or crazy lights. They’re vocals sounded sooo good. So obviously it wasn’t the sound system that was bad, it was individual performers.
I couldn’t understand Taylor Swift’s song.I don’t know the song but normally you are supposed to understand what singers are singing but i couldn’t understand her in certain parts. But i dont think she’s a bad singer. This was the first time that i saw these awards. idk if the vibe was supposed to be relax and fun but i thought it was unprofessional of her to walk on stage without shoes. i haven’t seen any other singers ever do that at any other awards show.
I liked Rascal Flats’ performance. They really got the audience into it. They had a lot of energy. Carrie Underwood look sooo beautiful in her performance.
That girl with the sweating armpits that ran up on stage made the CMT awards looked bad. First it showed that they were not organized. Why didn’t they have security near the stage to control the audience. Concerts even do that, why couldn’t a big live award show do it??? And second, what is the point of having security that waits an hour before taking action??? I couldn’t believe it. It reminded me of the MTV VMAs when some guy (can’t remember from what group)climbed onto this thing on the stage when his group didn’t win and like 30 security people came out to get him down. Only difference was that CMT sends like 2 security who get there when the girl was already done dancing lol.
Overall my reaction was that the award show seemed badly planned. Even if a show has a few bad parts the great parts make-up for it but this show didn’t have any parts that were “amazing” or “unforgettable”
Sandy K. says:
I am just now watching the awards show and reading the posts. I have to agree, Miley done a poor job of hosting. She is much better on her show. It was like she didn’t know how to read the prompters. She should have practiced more with her lines. As for the people that made up most of that “crap” that was spouted by her and Billy Ray they should be fired. I have heard Miley interviewed several times and she never talked about or to her father the way the writers had that written up. She always sounded so respectful and I thought that was great for a 15 year old. Most children nowadays don’t have respect for anyone. I guess that is why she did so lousy because it was out of her character.
What was that with Kelly Pickler? That is the dumbest acceptance speech I have ever heard. She should have just kept her mouth shut or said thank you and stopped there.
As for the clothes, Someone mentioned earlier in the post that MTV bought CMT. I didn’t know that, but no wonder the way the show is written and choreographed is so slutty and vulgar talking anymore. If the performers don’t wear anymore clothes than they do, there will be another Cher with see through clothes. Some of the dancing looks just like something you would see on MTV. I know country has gone a little bit rock, but I think now they are taking it too far. Country was about the only genre that you could let a child watch and not hear bad language and the dress was more decent. Now it is no better than the other genres.
What is it with high heels about 4 inches tall. Carrie Underwood looks like she is doing high steps. It looks so sickening to watch her and others walk around on stage like that. They have to watch every step because they might twist their ankle and fall. The tops looked like the women are about to fall out of them (I sure hope they were taped on there, because I think if Miley didn’t hold hers the whole time she was singing she would have fell out), I believe that happened on a rock award show once. (Maybe that is what the choreographers of the show wanted to happen, so there would be something to talk about except for how lousy they did about the show.) And I do hope that Miley, Taylor and some of the others that had those babydoll dresses on had shorts or something underneath them. Especially Taylor, because when she was singing the front row might have got a view. That dress that LeAnn Rimes had on was about the worst dressed I seen for the night. I think it was too too short and it looked awful on her. She is not tan enough for that color dress and that dark lipstick. As for Taylor not wearing her shoes on stage, she should have just left them at the seat and came up barefooted and just mentioned that they hurt her feet. That should show the stylist that looks isn’t everything, come up with something that is comfortable to wear too.
A mention about the presenters. I would rather see country stars this is a country show after all. Maybe some of them that radio doesn’t recognize anymore can come up and give the awards. They wouldn’t be forgotten and they are COUNTRY. Paula Abdul acted like she was on drugs. Did anyone look at her eyes and she even forgot what she was supposed to say. When she was being interviewed on the carpet before the show she actually looked like she was ready to pass out.
Don’t get me wrong. There were some good parts to the show. Mostly the singing. I guess it was because the writers of the show had less influence on that part. I think that Faith & Tim and Reba were about the best for the presenters. They seemed more at ease. I will close now, but the people that wrote all the things the hosts and presenters said should be fired and find a whole lot better ones. You might not have any country performers, that have any self respect for themselves, to even show up for the show next time. I know if it keeps getting any worse, I will be one that isn’t watching.
